Business Mathematics provides a practical approach to mastering essential mathematical and statistical skills in a business context. Starting with foundational concepts of the number system and basic calculations, the textbook progresses to more complex topics such as probability theory, data analysis, and financial decision-making. It equips students with the skills to perform detailed statistical analysis and apply mathematical reasoning to solve real-world business problems, ensuring they can effectively analyze, interpret, and communicate mathematical data in professional settings.

As an institution that is responsive to changing student requirements in certain sectors of the market, we have introduced an online option offering shorter courses. These courses provide quick wins for busy professionals and can fast-track careers in a matter of weeks or months. Professionals can stay at the cutting edge of industry-relevant skills development, as they compete in the dynamic 4IR (fourth industrial revolution) job market. Like our distance courses, our online courses allow you to register at any time.  Studying is flexible and can be scheduled according to your needs.

The course has been broken into three Study Phases (please see below). At the end of each study phase, there is a quiz that you are required to complete.

  1. Study Phase 1 Quiz:
    • An introduction to business calculations
    • Working with non-integers, percentages, ratios and proportions
    • Working with equations
  2. Study Phase 2 Quiz:
    • Using probability theory in business
    • Measuring, analysing and communicating workplace data
    • Central measures and measures of dispersion
  3. Study Phase 3 Quiz:
    • Geometry
    • Using mathematics to make financial decisions
    • Index numbers
    • Time series forecasting
ASSESSMENT:

Work through the workbook. At the end of each Study Phase, there is a quiz to complete. You need to complete and pass each of the quizzes with a minimum of 70% to get a certificate. No restrictions on your attempts.

COURSE EXIT OUTCOMES:

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe number systems and perform basic calculations with whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Conduct arithmetic operations with positive and negative numbers, including following rules and order of operations.
  • Simplify algebraic expressions, solve equations, and manipulate formulas, identifying dependent and independent variables.
  • Determine probabilities for events using sample spaces, Venn diagrams, two-way tables, and tree diagrams.
  • Differentiate between data and information, describe characteristics of good information, and use graphs and charts to illustrate workplace data.
  • Calculate mean, median, mode, range, interquartile range, variance, and standard deviation for raw and grouped data.
  • Calculate areas, perimeters, and volumes of triangles, circles, cylinders, and cuboids; use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems.
  • Create budgets, calculate VAT, markups, discounts, interest rates, and use spreadsheet software for financial calculations.
  • Define and calculate index numbers, index relatives, and perform time series deflation and trend analysis.
  • Identify trends and seasonal variations using moving averages, linear regression, and prepare time series forecasts.
